Things You Find in Brisbane Roofs

With increasing urbanisation and loss of native habitats, wildlife look for alternative locations to build their homes. Unfortunately, the space under suburban roofs can be seen as a veritable Taj Mahal for many animals.

So what are the most common unwelcome lodgers that our Possum Man team removes? Possums are our favourite pesky pet. As cute as they look, the noise, stench and destruction they can cause in your roof will put even the most animal loving person on edge.

We regularly remove Brushtail Possums, Ringtail possums and even the occasional Mountain Brushtail. Birds also tend to love the quiet and safety of suburban roofs. The only problem is they leave their bird lice and droppings behind. Our team have removed Pale-Headed Rosellas and Rainbow Lorikeet nests from roofs. We are also regularly called on deal with feral pigeons, starlings, Indian Mynas and sparrows.

Other pests we remove include the ever-present rats and mice, who like gnawing through our electrical wires and nibbling on key supporting beams. They tend to attract their own predators, so we have also been called in to remove both feral cats and curious kittens who have managed to get lost in roof cavities.

The odd swarm of bees and wasps have also been known to take up residence in roofs, although usually they prefer wall cavities. Of course, other things go “bump” in the night in suburban roofs. Squirrel gliders have recently started to move into Brisbane homes as a preferred place of residence. They are very cute members of the possum family, but can be noisy. Then there are assorted reptiles including bearded dragons, geckos in their thousands and snakes. Most snakes in roofs are generally pythons including the misnamed carpet snake, although you will also see green tree snakes taking up residence.

Pythons can be good to naturally control mice, rat and gecko populations in your roof. Spiders also love the quiet, darkness of roofs. Huntsmen spiders generally are not aggressive and if they do bite, there is generally only localised pain and swelling. Most Brisbane people tend to ignore Huntsmen spiders as they are a useful in reducing cockroach populations.

Red Back Spiders are more commonly found under the house, between floors and outside the home. If you have any of these in your roof, we can refer you to the appropriate people to help you relocate or remove them.
